What Is Bible Prophecy?

If you have ever read Bible prophecy and felt confused about how it all fits together, you are not alone.

Many Christians struggle to understand:

  • the role of Israel in Scripture
  • the kingdom of God
  • prophecy and the future
  • the difference between Israel and the Church
  • why some Bible promises do not seem to match what we experience today

As a result, many believers try to apply passages directly to themselves that were actually written specifically to Israel and connected to God’s prophetic kingdom program. When that happens, confusion, frustration, and disappointment often follow. But when you begin to understand God’s prophetic program in Scripture, the Bible starts making sense in a much clearer way.

One of the most important things you can learn in Bible study is the difference between Prophecy and Mystery.

Understanding this distinction can completely change the way you read Scripture.

The prophetic program refers to truths:

  • Spoken since the world began
  • Revealed through Israel’s prophets
  • Centered around God’s earthly kingdom plan

The mystery program refers to truths:

  • Kept secret since the world began
  • Later revealed through the apostle Paul
  • Connected to the Body of Christ

When you understand the difference between prophecy and mystery, you can:

  • Approach difficult passages honestly
  • Understand who you are in Christ
  • Stop building expectations on emotion or experience
  • Begin understanding how God is operating today according to Scripture

The key to understanding prophecy begins with understanding what the Bible calls “Time Past.”

In Genesis 12, God called Abram out from among the nations and established a covenant relationship with him.

At that point:

  • The rest of the nations of the world were given over to unbelief
  • Israel became the channel of blessing to the rest of the world
  • God’s covenant promises became connected to Abraham’s descendants

Then in Genesis 17, circumcision became the sign of that covenant, creating what Scripture later calls a “middle wall of partition” between Israel and the Gentiles. God’s focus and future plans for this earth was now centered around His plan for His chosen people, Israel.

From that point forward, God’s promises and predictions for blessing and a kingdom in the Bible were mainly about Israel. This is the program called “prophecy.”

One of the clearest themes throughout the Bible is that God intends to establish His kingdom on the earth.

The prophets repeatedly pointed toward a literal earthly reign under God’s chosen King.

The prophetic hope of Scripture is not merely symbolic or spiritualized. The Bible points toward a real kingdom established on earth under the reign of Christ.

Even the “Lord’s Prayer” reflects this expectation.

As you study prophecy, you will repeatedly see Israel at the center of God’s earthly kingdom plan. Once you see this, you cannot unsee it.

Before God gave Israel the Law at Mount Sinai, He explained why He had chosen them as a nation in the first place. Exodus 19:5–6 serves as a foundational statement of Israel’s purpose in God’s prophetic program. Rather than choosing Israel merely for privilege, God intended for them to become His representative nation on the earth—a kingdom through which His character, truth, and blessing would be made known to the world. These verses help explain Israel’s unique role in Bible prophecy and why the nation stands at the center of God’s earthly kingdom program.

As you look at the books of the prophets, you see God laying out the future of this earth, a coming kingdom and Israel’s position as His holy nation.

The prophets describe:
• Jerusalem as the center of the kingdom
• Israel restored spiritually and nationally
• The nations blessed through Israel

Bible prophecy also describes the restoration of creation itself.
The prophets speak about a future where:
• War ends
• Peace fills the earth
• Sickness is healed
• Human life is extended
• Righteousness governs the nations

God’s prophetic program ultimately points toward the restoration of the earth under Christ’s reign.

This is not just theology for scholars. Understanding prophecy affects:
• How you interpret Scripture
• What you expect from God today
• How you understand your identity in Christ
• How you approach difficult Bible passages

When you come to Romans 16:25, you are encountering one of the most important verses for understanding what God is doing today. In this passage, Paul points you to a truth that had been hidden since the world began but was now being revealed through his ministry—the mystery. This helps explain why many of the prophetic promises and kingdom expectations found throughout the Old Testament are not being fulfilled in the world today. According to Scripture, God’s prophetic program concerning Israel and the earthly kingdom has been temporarily delayed. Instead, God is now carrying out a previously hidden program centered on the Body of Christ and the dispensation of grace. Understanding this distinction can help you make sense of difficult passages, understand your identity in Christ, and see why rightly dividing the Word of truth is essential to understanding the Bible clearly.

The present dispensation is not the direct subject of Old Testament prophecy. Instead, God revealed a mystery program centered on the Body of Christ.
This helps explain:
• Why Kingdom promises are not being fulfilled today
• Why sign gifts connected to Israel’s kingdom program are not operating today
• Why believers today must understand God’s present instructions through grace

Much confusion in Christianity comes from failing to distinguish between God’s prophetic program for Israel and His present program of grace. When those distinctions are ignored:

• Expectations become distorted
• Verses become confusing
• Christian living becomes frustrating

But when you study Scripture carefully and contextually, the Bible begins fitting together with remarkable clarity.

The prophetic program throughout the Bible centers on the establishment of a literal, physical, earthly kingdom ruled by Christ.

According to this understanding of Scripture, when God temporarily set Israel aside, He revealed a different program through the apostle Paul involving:

• The Body of Christ
• The dispensation of grace
• A distinct body of instruction for believers today

Without understanding these distinctions, many Bible passages can appear contradictory or confusing.
