Dispensation Defined
A consistent, literal interpretation of Scripture results in Dispensationalism. Therefore, dispensationalism is not an approach to the Bible, nor a view of the Bible, but the result of a consistent, literal interpretation. As revealed in the Scriptures the word 'dispensation' occurs 9 times in the New Testament and is variously translated dispensation, stewardship, and edifying. The stewardship in Scriptures may be defined from at least four viewpoints: God's, the steward's, the household's, or the general view of the delegated responsibility. 1.God's viewpoint: A dispensation may be defined as a unique period in the divine program related to man in which there are numerous elements, one of responsibility to some, or all of mankind and is the element giving the dispensation its name and responsibility. A dispensation occurs in time while an age occurs in or out of time. 2. Stewards viewpoint: A responsibility given by the Lord to regulate a part or all of mankind, dipensing to them the rules they need to live by, the how, and why. 3. Household viewpoint: A rule of life imposed by the Lord through a steward upon a household consisting of all or some of mankind. 4. General viewpoint: A phase in God's divine program for man consisting of specific rules to regulate their lives imposed on some or all of mankind, by the appointed steward. Remember:Men are always saved by grace through faith (Eph.2:8,9). The object of faith can change (Heb.11;1Cor.15:1-4;Luke18:31-34). A dispensation didn't save the ones unto whom it was administered. A dispensation then is a stewardship given at some point in man's existence in time whereby God through a steward or stewards gives revelations to some or all of mankind by which they are to order their lifestyle as a household (Luke12:42;Eph.3:1-3). A dispensation deals with the rules of ones lifestyle and teaches mankind something about themselves, whereas an age teaches man revelation about God.
