OUTLINES
The following outlines continue our study of Salvation and specifically what
we have in our position in Christ. It never ceases to amaze me how well God
has woven these truths together. One can learn one or two truths and
appreciate them but as he learns more of them, he sees how they are
connected, he understands how they depend upon one another, forming
relationships and the basis of other benefits.
The first outlines is on our liberty in Christ, a truth seriously under
attack in many of our fundamental churches. We are so afraid of people doing
something wrong that we fail to emphasize real Christian liberty. It becomes
plain that the main idea of this liberty is freedom from law, which includes
the Law, and freedom from our sin nature. Many Bible teachers do not
understand what they affirm when they teach the law for Christian living.
The Law actually goads the sin nature to action. This was its intention, to
prove that one had a sinful nature and because of this it was good, like an
x-ray proving that one has a cancer or tumor. When believers are encouraged
to live by the Law today we are unknowingly encouraging them to operate in
their flesh as Paul indicates in Galatians 3:1-3 and Romans 7. What
believers need to hear is that they are freed from the sin nature and from
law in order to serve one another.
The second outline continues this idea by considering our being in-lawed in
Christ. The believer is not under the Mosaic Law but has been given the new
commandment. That commandment was restated by Christ in several forms
resulting in commandments and a type of law, a positive law of love for
other believers. This was the essence of being liberated from the Law and
sin nature so that one can love other believers. One loves other believers
by doing something for them not by telling them, "I love you." One loves by
work and truth towards other believers. In so doing one fulfills the Law of
Christ. This law keeps the believer from offending or tripping up his fellow
believers. It encourages him to consider others rather than to be confined
by a set of rules.
The third outline develops the idea that you are already a saint in Christ.
So many christians are affected by Roman Catholicism and medieval theology
that they thing they must do something saintly to be a saint. One is already
a saint in Christ. Because Christ set Himself apart by leaving this world
and returning to the Father the believer in Him is set apart. The idea of
holiness is sometimes confusing. The primary idea is setting something apart
to a purpose or person. My wife keeps silverware in the kitchen for use in
cooking and eating. It is set apart for the purpose. By setting it apart for
this use it is set apart from use as garden tools [serving spoons make nice
hand spades] or construction tools [I once cut outlet holes in sheet rock
with a steak knife which has not been allowed back in the kitchen drawer].
When a couples weds they set themselves apart to each other. This results in
their being set apart from others. It would be a sad marriage if the latter
were the emphasis rather than the former. God is holy because each Person is
distinct from the other two and yet maintains His unity to the others. No
conflict exists between the persons of the Godhead. This ultimately the hope
or anticipation of holiness for the believer, to be without conflict in
relationship to his sin nature and this world system. Therefore, the Grace
believer is not only a saint in Christ but possesses sanctification in
Christ meaning he can practice being set apart to God in his daily life.
The fourth outline involves the believer being called a brother by our
Savior. This study especially meant much to me. I've taught through the fact
of this truth but haven't fully understood the import of it. This time I saw
how it fits together. It involves our Savior's priesthood, His incarnation,
His death and removal of the fear of death. As believers who struggle in
this life are encouraged to come to the throne of grace, one is encouraged
to approach his Savior as his High Priest. We sometimes have struggled so
much and see ourselves as such a disappointment that we can't imagine that
God would really give us an "audience." We can't believe that He wants us to
approach Him. Yet our Savior is a merciful and faithful High Priest. As a
result, He is not ashamed to call us brothers. This is the basis of a bold
approach before God. We so often subject our prayer life to law issues that
we do much harm to it, failing to see just how fully gracious God is toward
us. By understanding our High Priest's attitude toward us, it should
encourage us to approach Him, especially when we are facing difficulties.
It is also important to note that "brother" is used of His relationship
through His incarnation and High Priestly position. Many LDS live in our
area and they readily call Christ their brother. They do this rather than
acknowledging Him as their Savior or Lord. They see Him as a brother because
they believe He was created by God the Father as were we. They refuse to
recognize His eternal uncreated existence. They also believe that we are
eternal spirit beings come down to inhabit human natures which is superior
to existing in a spirit form. All this contradicts the very use of this idea
of brother in Hebrews 2.
The final outline regards our priesthood. All we Grace believers form the
spiritual house of God, the temple or habitation of God, and all this exists
in our position in Christ. In fact, we will continue to be the temple of God
into the future. Revelation 3:12 indicates that in the future we will be
pillars in the temple of God. We are promised that He will never go out from
that temple as in 1 Thessalonians 4:17. As this house we are also a
priesthood. This priesthood exists to offer up spiritual sacrifices to God.
We managed to cover three of the sacrifices this last week: The sacrifice of
our bodies to live for God; The sacrifice of faith directed at the promise
of empowerment for serving other believers; The sacrifice of giving to the
material needs of other believers.
That's quite a bit of material. I trust you can study God's Word and digest
it.
